It is a shame more people don’t study art history. Especially when discussion turns to the topic of “modern” art. I never thought art theory would be so applicable to coding and game dev forums but it’s a perennial topic.

I do think there is such a thing as too much choice and that channels that are designed for a certain amount of content can become clogged by a sudden increase in content.

Discoverability is already a huge issue. Look at Steam these days, Steam is a zoo. And if there’s enough slop about, people may assume that your work is slop too. I think any port of a game to another system is going to be assumed to be AI from now on.

And that’s why, if you’re going to introduce classifications, I’d divide it along the lines of Ports Vs Original Concepts. It’s entirely clear, completely unambiguous and the reality is that most AI driven things will largely fall into the Port category because creating something new with AI requires much more effort.

I didn’t say my opinion is better than yours; I offer my arguments, while you do an exercise in stuffing as many logical fallacies in the discussion as possible while claiming “my opinion is just as valid”. Huge difference.

Strawman argument. The essence of the argument is not that AI by itself is bad (though it does have net negative consequences too), in fact many here (myself included) insist that it can be useful. It’s the _use_ of AI, such as it is, that is bad.

like ive been saying…is a pointless argument for both sides…

…i think ive proven that here multiple times…

yas can “think” what ya saying is right all ya want… (as i do!)… doesnt mean its right…(or that im right!)

im just tryin to get yas past this AI is bad nonsense, and realize that REAL PEOPLE are behind anything that is produced, and people have ALWAYS disagreed on things since the dawn of time

we are not going to solve the problems spewing on a forum and gettin ansy when you dont like whats being said…

i think ive kept this quite civil, and tried to give a different perspective, but i can see alot of closed minded people here who think they have all the answers…

…ive said my bit… ya can go back to ya pointless arguments without me!..

(all i want is this nonsense to die down and some action being taken instead of a pissing contest)

I’m new here and I’m enjoying seeing an active forum.

What I would say about AI is talk to the developers. I’m a professional dev of 30 years and AI is a wonderful tool. It is also the evolution of the tools that came before. Nobody writes CPC games on a CPC. They rarely ever did - they were cross compiled from other machines with better tools.

Pre AI home brew games used modern toolchains, graphics tools, audio converters, level designers that output raw ASM - the list goes on.

The change now is that anyone can be a developer and some people don’t like that.

Talk to professional developers. Lots of them are heavy AI users smashing out the best code they have ever written. In my day job my code has better automated tests, more features and better refactoring. I spend more time making the end product better and that is my job. Does it generate crap - yes it does and my job is to keep it clean. I know what I want to achieve and AI does a lot of it.

It’s not going away folks. It’s not a fad.

Code monkeys went out of style a decade ago. All the devs I know use multiple frameworks, tool chains, have domain knowledge and do far more than just key in code. Don’t cry for the devs they are fine!

Welcome!
What you’re saying about AI in the professional world is great news for us users because it will lower costs and prices for products and services derived from tasks where AI is increasingly and more efficiently replacing human work, such as in programming. But the debate here centers on the influence of AI on retro scenes such as this, not governed by market forces.

As a professional programming with 30 years experience, aren’t you worried that your work will become less and less valuable as anyone can do it?

A career in IT has never been static. I was a MSDOS programmer in FoxPro and C, then a Windows dev in C++ and C#. Then I switched to a modern ERP stack with bits of javascript support. Along the way were SQL servers and DTS, message queues, VANs VPNs, SSL, FTP and now Azure and Fabric and data lakes and.. and.. it never ends. People with long career adapt all the time.

The technicals changed but the core business knowledge remained constant. Understanding financials or warehousing or how things are manufactured is the real knowledge of developers.

Anyone can become a developer to a reasonable standard. Like anyone can learn to draw or play basic piano. There are virtuosos in all areas but competency can be attained with effort.

So I welcome the new tools just like I welcomed the move to client server and then to SAAS. Each technology shift gives me more tools to make better solutions.

However before I annoy too many people I do understand the effect of AI on the retro scene. It has been the preserve of a very select few who have invested a lot of time in very niche skills. If you wanted a commercial quality game you needed a strong background in low level ASM and ideally a team of people for sound and graphics.

I do get that. I wish I’d finished my games 10 years ago but I did not have the time to invest a year of effort or the desire to release something I was unhappy with.

Back in the 80’s game devs used to decompile other people’s games to find out how stuff worked. (I know I’ve worked with ex game devs). Good devs borrow what works and AI is the distillation of that. For right or wrong.

</div>

I think you’re looking at this from the perspective of the present moment.
If, in a year, all the knowledge you’ve accumulated over 30 years and what you say is the developer’s true knowledge, can be generated by AI with a single prompt, then if I were your employer, why would I pay 10 salaries like yours when I could get the same or better results just with a single employee who monitors the AI and writes prompts?

</div>

But the coding is about 20% of my job. Most developers do a lot more than that. Some will be replaced but I’ve not hired someone like that in a decade. I want people who can communicate and solve problems.

And yes there will be churn. Already people are moving into the MCP space taking their years of experience from one type of interface to another.

</div>

Ok, I see that you’re speaking from the employer’s perspective. So I understand your enthusiasm for AI. However, AI also is another challenge for companies and entrepreneurs. For example, let’s consider a video game development company today: if, in the future, anyone can create their own top-quality game just by typing a prompt, why would anyone pay for a video game made by someone else?

I think there will be huge change but the truly creative element will remain. Triple A games will still need designers, producers and storyboard writers to some degree. The delivery of the game and how it is unit tested and playtested will change to include more AI pipeline. I’m not in triple A games so I don’t know how much of this is happening already. I’d imagine new tools use AI already.

Indie games will be interesting. I can foresee some fantastic new games from people with ideas but no output ability. Who knows if some 15 year old will come up with the next Tetris.

AI has the potential to do the work of all those designers, producers, and storyboard writers you’re referring to better and faster, so all of that will be replaced sooner or later.

As AI advances, it will become increasingly capable of meeting users’ needs for goods and services. Users will simply have to pay a monthly fee to a Big Tech AI provider to satisfy our leisure needs, such as an endless supply of games, TV shows movies… the only limit is the prompt. Legal, consulting, medical services, among others, will also be replaced sooner or later.

In short, I believe that the small and medium-sized business market will also face major challenges with AI in the coming years.

Yep I agree. Its genuinely frightening. There won’t be app stores or search engines it will be prompt engines. “Make me another 20 episodes of Farscape with a complex new story arc” might be a realistic option.

The choice as I see it is embrace it and adapt or be crushed by it.

However, if this forum said “no AI”. I’d respect that. Its unenforceable unless there was a 2020 cut off but I’d respect it and I’d understand why.

Don’t worry, I don’t think anyone will take offense at your contributions to this discussion.
In fact, I think AI will bring about fewer changes in retro scenes like this than in the professional and business worlds because retro scene don’t follow the practical logic of the market.
The hobby for obsolete computers that are over 30 years old has already survived a few technological revolutions that even the companies that created those old computers couldn’t survive. I believe the retro scene will continue as long as its members want it to, regardless of the direction the technological competition takes in the real world.

What is truly concerning about AI is how it will affect the majority of the population, who still make a living by selling their labor or through entrepreneurship.
