All this discussion, bogging down in minute details about the use of AI is counterproductive and meaningless. I think we’ve all got a good grasp of what “vibe coded” means and where “use of tools” lies.

Anyone pretending not to understand the difference (in either camp) is distorting the discussion on purpose.

The discussion isn’t about using AI. It’s already being used simply by using the internet, running a search, or looking up information. The debate is whether to separate what is ARTISANAL from what is HYBRID by defining what is considered human in the AMSTRAD scene using “classic” tools—defining which tools are considered AI—and treating everything assisted as HYBRID, where the artificial ENTITY takes control of the process.

All other considerations, both moral and speculative, come later. It’s about creating well-defined categories to avoid absurd comparisons. A simple example: newcomers sharing programs entirely created by AI, with instant versions for different platforms that often have nothing to do with one another, like REVIVE8BIT or OLDSCHOOL. These should have their place in a separate category, since development follows a completely different path that has nothing to do with learning to program an AMSTRAD, but rather learning to prompt the AI entity—which reaches conclusions on its own that the user won’t even understand, having yielded control to the AI.

A place—meaning a category—for these projects and this way of making games could even be a positive thing. In this space, the evolution of this type of development revolves more around the human-AI relationship and the conversation with that ENTITY to get programs for the AMSTRAD, where “traditional” programming takes a back seat.

It’s not a matter of comparing, but of creating well-defined categories where, even if the end result is the same—creating a video game for our CPCs—the objective is entirely different. Think of Olympic weightlifting: no matter how you look at it, it will always be less effective than an excavator. They both lift weight, yes, but one is about overcoming human limits and sacrifice, while the other is about logical efficiency for a specific task.

For the record, it’s interesting to see how these HYBRID productions can evolve the software of a machine like the AMSTRAD, and they should certainly be enjoyed. Since their development is inevitable, it’s best to embrace it smoothly.

when it comes to the CPC community..the way i see it, its a losing battle for both sides. neither side is going to be fully happy…

that said i do agree there needs to be some disclaimer on art in projects, but it doesnt need to be disclaimed for every little thing… eg yes for sprite or graphics generated by AI.. but for code it should be fine to be used with little to no disclaimer…

for example, where do you guys stand on using AI to build tools and hardware?, things that are not so much in the artistic world?.. eg the emulator ive built with claude over the last 3 months…after feeding it documentation i had collected as its source of truth (in a RAG) should i have to disclaim i used AI for the entire project (its clear on the github!)

keep in mind, hardware and tools built with AI have to work right or they are not going to see the light of day!..

edit: i should add that credit has been given for the documentation that was used extensively! and to add.. Claude does not allow to just copy code.. i asked it to look at some other emulators to see how they did things and implement it the same, but it refused, and would only look at the actual function of the original code, and implement the exact same function with its own code (and my coding style and preferences, eg, everything commented!)

The microcomputer SCENE is pure convention; we gather out of love for the machine and, above all, the nostalgia that brings us joy. Of course, going back to analyze everything done up to this point is a futile effort. But debating and reaching a sensible consensus on at what point something is considered a collaboration with AI, versus an all-AI production, is worthwhile. Even creating neologisms to define this blend of human and entity work. In the example you gave, it would be a collaboration with AI, and its use should be listed in the author CREDITS, not just in the documentation. The debate is there; it might not lead anywhere, but now is the right time to define when this “collaboration” on parts of a project means the AI has taken ultimate control and it becomes an AI-generated production. People keep insisting on treating AI as just a tool, when it’s actually an AGENT that makes decisions.
Keep in mind that this distinction aims to protect artisan developers—which I define as those who do things the traditional way, through effort, learning, and talent without taking black-magic shortcuts—from the new “developers” who are basically just AI PROMPTERS. They want the exact same recognition as someone who built things traditionally, despite having invested only a tiny fraction of the effort into the project.
At any rate, identifying isn’t judging; it’s simply defining how the project was made. Nothing more.

Progress is exponential, and there are warning signs that if we don’t draw a clear line now, the waters will become murky and unlivable—just as is happening in current computer scenes, native ports, and modern game development. Not to mention the invasion of audio-visual production and almost every area of the job market.

“collaboration” could be said about artistic use too… and really it always is in every use case, there always has to be a human in the loop, feeding it the ideas they want to bring to life…

the nonsense about ai breaking out and hacking things is total hype!

and AI is far from a ‘subject’ its a machine.. it in no way “thinks” in any sense.. and if its setup right to begin with, it wont do anything other that what its asked… and it even writes documentation to a defined spec, `"Wants ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English standard used when writing docs, comments, or responses"` bye bye emdash nonsense!

I wondered whether the relative simplicity of Amstrad CPC game was a specific boost in the ability to create derived artifacts or whether it would work on bigger productions.

TL;DR: And … it works on modern games, too!

I set t=144 in the link below, don’t now whether it will jump to 2:24 in the video below:

Yes, at the end he raises what I think is the crucial point - that of the psychology of _ownership_ of a piece of work. If you use generative AI to completely do something, do you have suffucient emotional investment in it? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t. Maybe even you don’t care, or do care. I suppose it depends on the individual.

And that’s fine tbh. _But that’s not for me_. I have emotional investment in my projects. As I have said previously, I use LLMs to help me produce the best work _I can_. It is a tool _for me_, and I treat it as such. I need such a level of involvement in my projects that requires me to use AI in a way to maintain that.

Other creators have different thresholds and tolerances though.

I think it all boils down to what the individual wants, both producer and consumer.

TL:DR yeah do whatever you want. No skin off my nose, personally. YMMV of course

about 6 months ago i was trying to port Gran Turismo to native PC using AI, i was amazed how well it knew MIPS R3000A and amazed it could decompile the binary (it installed ghidra to reverse it!).. i got most of the cars and tracks converted over, but couldnt get the physics (i probably didnt push hard enough!)..

I get the spirit of the comment, but rebuttal is easy: the other tools were easily accepted by the community, the use of AI is a paradigm shift that is not.

There’s no hard, natural-occurring lines there; it’s what we make of it.

There is a fundamental difference between AI and the other tools you mentioned, and that is that AI can completely replace human ability, allowing, for example, the world’s least skilled people to produce better graphics in a fraction of a second than someone who is truly talented and dedicated.

The risk with AI is that it will lead to a loss of appreciation for genuine human talent.

The whole thing is getting rather ecumenical, I suppose.

Human talent has been valued since the dawn of civilisation. If we are entering a new era in which human talent no longer holds any value, it is not just a matter of four freaks sitting around a 40-year-old computer.

Human ability to do mathematics didn’t disappear or wasn’t devalued when Excel was invented.

We may be arguing at cross purposes here though, now that I’ve said that though.

On generative art, as I’m not an artist, I have no skin in the game. I could probably agree with you on that. I prefer to use human art and music in my projects as it means an artist gets a credit, but when it comes to programming itself, that’s not art, or even a creative endeavour. An AI is a tool, just like autocomplete in an IDE is.

I understand your argument. It is almost word for word the one painters were making against photography in 1859 :

> **As the photographic industry was the refuge of all failed painters, too ill-equipped or too lazy to complete their studies, this universal infatuation bore not only the character of blindness and imbecility, but also the color of vengeance.**
