[#revive8bit](https://x.com/hashtag/revive8bit?src=hashtag_click) brings [#GALAGA](https://x.com/hashtag/GALAGA?src=hashtag_click) via the “AI corrected” technique (uses AI and tweaks it to fix errors). I loaded this up and was initially quite hopeful as the graphics look nice, but I came away incredibly disappointed.

First, there is terrible music slowdown almost instantly.

Once you have the second ship, there is no challenge to the game. You can wipe out almost every incoming enemy by sitting still in the middle of the screen and hitting fire.

There’s horrible glitching with the enemy’s tractor beam when they’re taking your ship away.

If you do let the enemies come and form their attack wave, there is only one enemy attack pattern - the enemies home in directly on your ship while occasionally dropping bombs, so it’s very easy to kill them. Unless they all decide to attack together, in which case you end up (like I did) with 8 enemies all on top of each other moving down at my ship dropping bombs which were impossible to avoid.

Apart from the slowdown, the opening music is very similar to the arcade, but when you complete a challenging stage, the music is so discordant it sounds like the CPC is having a medical emergency.

I gave up around stage 15 as there was no point in carrying on.

Here’s a cart version if anyone wants to try it on their GX4000. However, it won’t save the hiscores (one nice feature that they have included), it fails on the PicoGX.

I know I was very critical, but if the game was hand-written I would be more forgiving 🙂

However, even if it had been hand-crafted, it feels like they released the game with minimal testing, they must have seen these issues before releasing it!

Music slowdown has been fixed. Also there is progressive difficulty already added but I will have mode selection in a day or two for difficulty.

I suppose we have to negotiate with Aladdin’s lamp. The debate lies in whether AI is an object or a subject. Hence the need to label its use. The trouble is that this is new; it has nothing to do with mere assistive tools, but rather with outright replacements.

The results of this conversion can be exactly the same as those of a human Amstrad programmer, except that the human’s flaws are attributed to a lack of experience or a lack of time to dedicate to the project. The problem is that if it’s a human, the effort should be praised even if not all goals are met—that makes sense. Should we expect the same from a machine?

Is it fair to lump scene artisans and robotic machines into the same category?

The music really is excellent now, no slowdown and sounds great 🙂

I like how the enemy tractor beam glitch is gone, it looks really good too.

The enemy AI still has a few issues though. When they fly down at your ship, they still only move towards you. This means there’s no way to avoid them, you have to shoot them (unlike in the original arcade version where they can go past you off the bottom of the screen without hitting you). This also means that when several enemies all fly at you at the same time (which happens a lot), you can end up with 5 or 6 enemies all on top of each other. It’s up to you, of course, but it would be more like the arcade version if they had some random behaviour and didn’t just follow your ship all the time.

By wave 5 or 6, I found the enemies were also getting confused and instead of forming a large group on the screen and waiting for the rest of the enemies to fly in, they now sometimes started to fly down at you before the next set of that wave’s enemies has come in (if that makes sense). This may be deliberate though.

Saving the hiscore is a really nice touch, though it took me a while to remember that I had to set the disc to “unprotected” on RetroVirtualMachine for it to work!

Thanks Slider271, I am fixing the AI issues. You are right about the deliberate of the attack before all waves are in. I think this works better for the Amstrad, mostly due to the small screen height.

And thank you for the updated version, it does fix a lot of the enemy AI issues 🙂

I’ve played the latest version of this quite a lot more tonight, and I also found a CPC game called Star Fight which I’ve been trying: [https://youtu.be/AKprbS3t7mU?si=xPbH\_RMf3\_97UqtB](https://youtu.be/AKprbS3t7mU?si=xPbH_RMf3_97UqtB)

I don’t want to be unpleasant, but I have to say that Star Fight is a more impressive shoot 'em up for the CPC, especially considering it was originally written in Amstrad Basic with some additional machine code. That’s not to take away from Galaga, but there is a lot of flickering and other issues (such as the enemies still clustering together, and the game restarting almost immediately after losing a life rather than letting the enemies settle back down) which hamper its playability, while Star Fight runs incredibly smoothly with no flicker at all and is extremely playable.

I know Star Fight is a simpler game, but it does show what can be done with the Amstrad when it’s hand-coded, compared to putting prompts into AI. And Galaga doesn’t really play like the arcade game, which it’s meant to be based on, unless you’re being very generous.

I’m aware that I may come across as a bit of an ass here, but it’s only that I do feel strongly that it’s important to create code that you understand and can improve personally to make a better game. If I’m being unfair to @revive8bit and they do understand the AI-created code but are just not advanced enough in their coding yet to make a better game then I apologise. I just feel that, having genuinely put a few hours into playing this version of Galaga in case I was missing something, that it needs a lot of reworking to become a properly good, playable game. And if that reworking was done by human coding, it would end up a much better game. I’d love a properly accurate version of Galaga on the CPC!

However every CPC coder and his CAT knows that you can easily change the screen’s width and height to accommodate the needs of your game while keeping everything within the 16k screen memory boundaries.
