> The Secret of Monkey Island-GX is a point-and-click demo in development using R-GX GDK, running on the Amstrad CPC Plus and GX4000.
>
> This is currently a proof of concept (POC). Graphics are simple transfert from DOS VGA to Mode 0, 16 colors, and many features are still missing or unfinished. Expect glitches, bugs, no sprite scaling yet, and no room transition effects.
>
> The main goal of this demo is to evaluate how much RAM and ROM a game like Monkey Island would require on the CPC Plus/GX4000, and to explore how a point-and-click adventure could be made playable with either a keyboard or a joypad.
>
> At this stage, the focus is on testing what’s possible on the hardware and identifying the technical limitations before moving on to a full implementation… if possible.

Is this an attempt at implementing the SCUMM engine or a port of Monkey Island with a new engine?

In any case, the rendering is significantly better than the Atari ST version. How many colors are being displayed?

Hi guys,

I’m the developer of R-GX GDK and the recent demos you’ve been seeing lately.

It’s great to see people discussing the project.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions. I’ll be happy to answer them.

Thanks for your interest and support!

Hi, I guess my first question would be: how much coding knowledge is needed to use your dev kit? From the videos, you’re making it as easy as possible when it comes to tilesets, music and even laying out a racecourse. But what’s the underlying scripting language when it comes to controlling your character, defining enemies and their movement, etc? I apologise if it’s been mentioned in your videos and I’ve just missed it!

This does all look really impressive 🙂

Evening Slider,

Regarding coding knowledge: anything from none at all to expert level.

If you’re new to development, the GDK will guide you through the setup process. For example, you can choose the screen size for your game, and the GDK will let you adjust the CRTC values while showing the results in real time. If terms like “screen mode”, “screen size” or “CRTC” don’t mean anything to you, simply click the Wizard button, answer a few questions, and voila, everything is configured for you.

As for controlling your character, the system is designed around the joypad, so there’s nothing for the user to configure. That’s already handled by the GDK.

Defining enemies and their movement is probably one of the easiest parts.

In Level Mode, you’ll see your map and, on the right, a list of available actors, NPCs, platforms, and other game objects. Simply place them where you want them, and they’ll appear at those locations when the level starts.

For basic enemy movement, just define a left boundary and a right boundary, and the NPC will automatically patrol back and forth between those two points.

You will also have access to several starter templates. They’re not complete games, but they provide more than enough groundwork to help you get your own project up and running quickly. Think of them as solid starting points that you can customize and expand however you like.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you’re enjoying what you’ve seen so far!

Welcome to the forum. It sure is looks like a very interesting project and I’m certainly keen to give it a try. From the various videos it seems incredibly flexible, so i’m very curious how it manages that without becoming complex - most game development tools lean towards simple but inflexible or flexible but basically programming languages.

Either way will have a keen eye on the development of this.
