Hi everyone!

I’d like to introduce **nuBBS** , a bulletin board system I’m developing for my **Amstrad CPC 6128 Plus** , building on **TWF\_BBS** , a program I originally wrote back in the 1990s.

My goal is to bring it to the **19th edition of Brusaporto Retrocomputing** , where other computers will be able to dial into it through real modems and a telephone switchboard. Visitors will get to experience connecting to a BBS, browsing its menus and leaving messages—with the familiar soundtrack of two modems negotiating a connection!

nuBBS runs directly on the CPC. It’s written in BASIC using **ABASC** , with some Z80 assembly routines, **USIfAC** for serial communication and an **M4 board** for file storage.

Direct serial tests with a Mac are working, including ASCII and ANSI screens. Along the way, I also ended up writing a Mac terminal program to test it—apparently one project wasn’t enough!

The next step is to test the complete connection through the modems and switchboard.

I’d love to share my progress here and hear from anyone who has worked on similar projects or used a CPC to run a BBS.

Paolo / Neurox66

Cool, you could consider NTC BASIC if you want a full 4mb RAM multitasking and other bells and whistles 😉

Thanks Julian! 😄 I’ll definitely keep NTC BASIC in mind when I start working on nuBBS 2.0!

For now, I’m still fighting my way through version 1.0! 😂
My biggest challenge isn’t 4MB of RAM or multitasking… it’s getting a 40-year-old computer to talk reliably to a modem! 😂

Here’s nuBBS running on an Amstrad CPC 6128 Plus, waiting for an incoming call.

An analogue modem?

Yes, a real analogue dial-up modem! 😄

I’m using an external V.90 modem connected to the CPC through USIfAC and a MAX3232 interface.

If everything works as planned, visitors will even hear the classic modem handshake! 😁

This is seriously cool! 🙂

Can’t wait to try it if someone puts it online -but then again I don’t have a running modem, it just occurred to me 🤦🏻‍♂️

Maybe Telnet support would be an option, so that you could use a standard terminal program to dial in. Then it would also be possible to use [SEXPOTS](https://wiki.synchro.net/util:sexpots) (Synchronet External Plain Old Telephone System) to add a real modem to it and convert the incoming call into a Telnet login.
Lately I played a lot around with modems and got a nice little collection of them 😄

Thanks Octoate! 🙂

Telnet is certainly an interesting option, perhaps for a future version.

For now, though, my goal is to recreate the original BBS experience, with real modems communicating over a telephone line, just like we did back in the 80s and 90s.

That’s part of the fun of this project! 😁

Awesome project Paolo! Maybe I should be coming to the next edition of Brusaporto !

very interesting… id defo be interested in a telnet version, as setting up an analog modem in this day is a bit of a PITA!..

you can also use an ESP8266/ESP32 connected to the usifacs serial, that can act as the modem, and connect via wifi to the local network

Thanks for the suggestion! The idea of a Telnet version is interesting and could be a future development for nuBBS.

For now, though, I prefer to focus on communication via analog modems, especially since Brusaporto is just around the corner and I still have a few transmission issues to sort out.

Once everything is working as it should, I might also consider Wi-Fi access. 😁
