Outrun 2026

A port of the Master System version of Out Run to the Amstrad CPC 6128 (128K), on a single disk.

This game was programmed entirely by an AI: Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic), using Claude Code. I did not write a single line of assembly: I directed the project, tested every build on emulator and on real hardware, and reported what was wrong. Claude wrote the Z80 assembly engine, the extraction tools and the music conversion.

How it was made

The Master System code cannot run as-is on a CPC: its road relies on the console’s video hardware. The engine was therefore rewritten for the CPC, and everything else was measured on the Master System version rather than guessed: tracks, scenery, music, car handling.

Interesting. So what is the technique used to generate the road & sprites ?

Great idea! But these games should somehow be forced to work at 64k to be compatible with a standard GX… Keep it up AI & human!

Played this and then the original CPC Outrun to remind myself how bad it was…

This version feels really good, and the music is great. The road looks a little wonky at the horizon and the forks in the road are a bit sudden but it’s still a huge improvement, playability-wise, over the original conversion.

Seems like this one really needs some polishing from a humanoid.

I asked the author but haven’t received a reply yet; however, I assume the AI handled this part too—though we don’t know how, heh.

What’s new

Road

  • Fixed a vertical white line at the edge of the screen when the side of the road goes off-screen.
  • The far end of the road near the horizon stays centred instead of spilling over to the right.

Driving off the road

  • You can now drive further towards the edge before reaching the sand, as on the Master System.
  • In the sand, the car slows down gradually to 220 km/h instead of dropping straight to 144 km/h.
  • After hitting a tree or a sign, the car slows down over a second or so while it spins, instead of stopping dead.

Roadside objects

  • Trees, signs and other roadside objects now stand at the same distance from the road on both sides. Palm trees on the right no longer overlap the road.
