Hi

I have recently repaired a CPC464 board where several chips had been fried. The board is now passing diagnostic tests and loads fine from tape however I purchased a Ulifac to go with it but am having issues.

The VR40007 is one that Charlie confirms should work with the Ulifac v5b but he has not tested with the v6.

I have cleaned and cleaned the connectors and even given them a lite sanding but usually get a constantly rebooting screen, corruption or a black screen.

Sometimes I will get a normal ready prompt and have managed to load diagnostics 1.3 from tape. It detects and tests the 512kb upper ram ok but fails on the rom test.

None of the ulifac command seem to work or once in a while will lock up the machine.

So has anyone else tested the v6 Ulifac with a VR40007 gate array? or know if any of the changes to the ulifac between 5b and 6 would cause issues?

Thanks

If the edge connector is cleaned as you say (although erratic behavior like the one you describe is a classic symptom of edge connector’s bad contact) , and diagnostic fail in Rom test, then there might be a problem with ROM chip or the circuit connecting it to the board. When Amstrad boots, did you try to load something from usb stick in default mode?

Anyway, i’ve also contact Charlie (the designer of VR chips) and let him know about this issue and hopefully give us his opinion too 🙂

Thanks Ikonsgr, I’m trying to track down another CPC or an original gate array but am also wondering about the edge connector and how I can maybe bypass the connections somehow?

The only way to bypass the ribbon edge connector cable, is to somehow physically solder a 50pin female connector that will plug directly into ULIfAC’s 50pin male connector, perhaps something like this will fit into edge connector : [https://www.ebay.ie/itm/157206090530](https://www.ebay.ie/itm/157206090530)

Also, since the board you have was damaged and repaired , and even if CPC boots ok without ULIfAC board, there is always a possibility that a trace is not making good contact somewhere, that affects the connection with expansion port. Many years ago, i fried a CPC 6128 (by giving 12v instead of 5v…) and had to replace EVERYTHING on the board! But, this was not enough, i had erratic problems with drive function and after a lot of effort i discover that there were a few trace cuts on the board, and only after i solder cable bypasses, Amstrad finally worked as it should.

This is a very good tool for such inspections: [Interactive BOM for KiCAD](https://pelrun.github.io/cpc-schematics/index.html)

Unfortunately in such “heavy damage” cases, if you still got problem after repairs, it needs a lot of patience (even luck) to discover the culprit and fix it 🙂

Yeah I completely understand. And I think someone had put to much voltage on this machine.

I did check continuity from the Ulifac to the furtherest contact on the CPC board (be it the ROM, CPU etc) and everything was fine except for the ROM Enable which had 50ohms between the Gate Array and ROM so I ran a wire to bridge this but no change.
I had a few minutes this evening so soldered a male 50pin IDC to the edge connector and connected the Ulifac to it with a short 50pin SCSI cable. Result is the same so I have taken the plunge and purchased a NOS 40007 from someone in Germany. Will update when it arrives which may be a bit.
