It’s just a suggestion, if you have another idea, make like if it was your game But we can imagine a CPR only version with key informations for GX4000. And we can imagine a single key indication too, like PAUSE or FIRE2 ?
My knowledge of programming for the GX4000 is basically nil, but I was wondering…how possible is it to patch existing old CPC games to save the hiscores when using, for example, the PicoGX?
I was very impressed that Bomb Jack GX saves the hiscores on the PicoGX, so just wondered if it was possible for older games too? I’m guessing not, but maybe @Anthony_Flack would know?
The Pico GX documentation has a full description of how to access it’s features from the Z80; the only real trick is to find the high score code in the game you’re patching.
It should be totally possible as long as there is a little bit of free space somewhere to put the load/save code. I did try writing a generic load/save routine with the idea to try patching it into something but I’ve not got around to trying it on anything yet. I don’t have any experience reverse-engineering other people’s games…
Here is Fighting Warrior from Melbourne House converted for GX4000. A game I played a lot as a kid, I’m not really sure why in hindsight as it is very slow and monotonous. But holds a lot of sentimental value now.
Patch includes:
Option on loading screen for normal (Btn1) or inf. energy (Btn2).
Hi-score table is auto-populated with “GX4000 user” on game over.
Good to see this forum back active again, I will have to dust off my 8-bit compiler and hex editor again soon!
A quick tip: if, like me, you use NoCart solely to convert standard DSK image files into CPR format, use version 1.4 rather than a newer one. One of its limitations actually works to your advantage here, as your 191KB DSK files will be converted into 256KB CPR files instead of 512KB ones. The result? Games that load twice as fast on your PicoGX, of course !
I’m having a lot of problems with the new forum. My PC uses Windows 7, but the forum display is completely messed up. I can’t see the login menus. The forum page says browsers need updating. Even though I’ve updated Firefox, Opera, and Chrome, I’m still having the same problem. I’m posting from a friend’s PC. I hope someone can port “The Rocky Horror Show” and “The Game of Dragons” soon. I loved those games as a kid. I’ll upload the games I mentioned as soon as I can. Thanks.
I have converted to .CPR "ELECTRO FREDDY, SATELLITE WARRIORS, RALLY II the next week i put here. Bye at alls.
And here is a new patch of a classic from Capcom. Many thanks to @Urusergi that made a fantastic work patching an heavily compressed crack to offer this full and enhanced version :
It was a real adventure with this one. We start to talk about it last year, with multiple problems. Finally here it is with the title screen drawn by Steve for the C64 version, but I replaced the Softwork logo by the one of Tiertex. And we modified the ingame colours to have more logical ones on the HUD. We hope it will help to have some sympathy for this rude conversion of a Capcom classic
Yeah, I was waiting for @DARKGATE to open a new thread for this because it’s off-topic here, but there’s nothing to be done when someone uses an ancient browser that has reached EoL a long time ago… That said, indeed there’s r3dfox and also a Chrome fork that will run happily with up-to-date standards.
