Super Mario Bros - World 1-1

Here’s a WIP version of Super Mario Bros for the CPC 6128. It is based off the demo that Rhino did a while ago, but this uses the original graphics and sounds.

It runs at (mostly) 50hz with a smooth horizontal scroll. Only the first level is currently playable.

Enjoy!

Not sure why the disk image isn’t working in the embedded emulator? It does work fine in RVM desktop.

Woah, nice work! :open_mouth: Many thanks! The gameplay is perfect, and the scrolling is flawless. So are the music & SFX.
The colors are quite garish though. Why use so few colors? A yellow Mario is ugly. If you could give him a pink/flesh skin, and add some Brown/Red or Brown/orange rather than Orange/yellow, that’d be perfect !
Warning: some people in this thread WILL tell you to switch to Mode 1. Don’t listen to them !

Thanks for the feedback!

The color palette selection is actually restricted because of the way the 1px horizontal scrolling trick is done. It uses a mix of hardware scrolling and color palette swapping to achieve that smooth scrolling.

I will still try to update the color selection for Mario, I agree that nobody wants a yellow Mario

Judging from the youtube video, the graphics need a lot of attention, especially if you go with mode 0 (edit: like get rid of the clouds’ outlines as they look really weird).

This is absolute madness!!! Huge congrats again!!!

Great job, guys!
I’ve held out hope all these years that someone might be able to use that little engine to create a CPC version of the game. It would be great if you could make the full game.

What is that engine you are referring to? Got a link?

Played through this tonight and wow, it does feel like the NES original!

Would love a full version of this.
