Bubble Ghost

Bubble Ghost for the Amstrad CPC 6128 – a fan conversion of the 1990 Game Boy game.

You are a friendly ghost with one job: steer a fragile soap bubble through the 35 halls of a spooky castle. You can’t touch it – you can only blow it along. Snuff out candles, dodge spikes, fans and fellow spooks, and puff your bubble to the exit before the bonus runs out.

Features

  • All 35 halls, their hazards and devices, and the ending
  • Faithful Game Boy graphics in a Game Boy style frame
  • The original music and sound effects on the CPC’s AY chip
  • Loading screen from the original box art
  • Keyboard and joystick, at the same time
  • Runs from a real 3" drive, a Gotek/HxC, or an M4 / SD card – once loaded it never touches the disc again

This looks really nice, and it’s also a lovely little game!

Just note: current version has a bug that prevents you from getting past the title screen on RVM hence it’s not yet playable here.

That’s right, the author has been notified; for now, it only works on the Caprice32 emulator.

You can always play the original Amstrad version from 1988

I’ve now tried both versions (thanks @Gryzor) and while the GameBoy port is perfectly fine and seems to be a great recreation of the GB original, it does feel slightly redundant given that the CPC original is a very playable game, and looks superior in many ways.

Now, to be fair, I did only play the first few screens on the GB port, but I found the Amstrad to be more visually pleasing and more playable, and got to hall 12 before running out of lives. I can see why porting GB games that were never on the Amstrad is appealing, especially when the ports include improved visuals (eg Super CPC Tennis) but when it’s a game that was available on the original hardware I see less appeal, unless the original was appalling!

I see that the author has also produced a Spectrum port, but in that case would it not be more interesting to create a brand new Spectrum version which takes advantage of the Speccy’s capabilities? (Since I don’t think it came out on the Spectrum)
